Wwi Us Cavalry M1904 Leather Rifle Scabbard For M1903 Springfield W Both Straps:
Nice example of the M1904 US Military, Army, Cavalry, Artillery rifle scabbard, most often used for the M 1903 Springfield.
The scabbard has numerous stampings for various units, and they appear on both sides of the scabbard. The leather has the expected dings and marks for an item of its age and purpose. It is all over very good for the period. My apologies for the bluish hue......my camera has taken to adding a tint now and then, it will be aged brown in color when you receive it.
The inspectors initials appear as pictured, but the unit markings obliterate the arsenal markings, most likely Rock Island.
A third strap connection has been added, probably a field addition from WWI, and seen on a number I have had. This was done to change the straps position, and thus the sway of the scabbard, most likely by cavalry. The strap now showing at the base of the scabbard is the strap that formerly was about 1/3rd of the way down, and could simply be put back there if wished.
Both straps are good. They have a little residual stiffness, but not much. One coat of leather conditioner softened them almost completely. There is one of the two original metal snaps included on the lower end.
