Here you have a WWI US Home Front Ship Building Employee\'s numbered badge. The badge is embossed War Service Ship Building and features a freighter beneath a Federal Shield. It is numbered 88560. The Home Front Badge or Pin features an early pin back device. It is not maker marked.

The Badge is non-magnetic and stamped out (one piece construction). It projects a resolute commitment to win a War overseas. The badge depicts a freighter underway. Around the circumference are the words War Service Ship Building. There is a Federal Shield above the freighter. This represents a different variation of this Home Front badge. I have had a couple others that were shield shaped with eagles.

There is an early needle pin and cradle on the reverse. The color is what was found on medals and pins in the late 19th and early 20th Century. The badge is stamped with a number on the reverse; 88560. It measures (counting the shield) 1.5 by 1.6 inches.

Background: War was declared it became critical to not only raise an Army large enough to fight a large War, but required a Merchant Navy to transport that raised Army and its supplies, armaments, and material across an ocean. Ship Building became critical to both making a contribution to the Allied efforts initially, and to win the War in the long run.
