Exceptionally rare and fascinating, original, ca1863 Confederate Imprint / Civil War Military Sheet Music featuring a fantastic lithograph portrait of Confederate General Jeb (J.E.B.) Stuart in uniform. This outstanding Confederate Sheet Music is titled “Riding A Raid". Published at Richmond, Virginia ca1863 by J. W. Randolph.


This fantastic piece of original, Confederate Imprint Sheet Music measures approx. 9 1/2” by 12” and is the 1st Edition of this important Confederate Civil War Rally Song. Offered here is the complete, 4 page Sheet Music as published.


The words of this Song which accompany a melody that was to be played "Spirited but not too fast", extol the virtues of Confederate Cavalry General James Ewell Brown "Jeb" Stuart and those who rode with him in the cause of the South. While there is mention of Stonewall Jackson in the first few verses, it is obvious that at the time the Song was written, Jackson had already had been killed in action and the Song was written to promote the heroic exploits of General Stuart and those who rode with him into battle. We will let the words of this Confederate Rally speak for themselves.


The words of the Song follows:


Now gallop, now gallop, to swim or to ford! Old Stonewall, still watching, prays low to the Lord: "Good-bye dear old Rebel! The river's not wide, And Maryland's lights in her window to guide."

Come tighten your girth and slacken your rein; Come buckle your blanket and holster again; Try the click of your trigger and balance your blade, For he must ride sure that goes Riding a Raid!


'Tis old Stonewall, the Rebel, that leans on his sword, And while we are mounting, prays low to the Lord: "Now each cavalier that loves Honor and Right, Let him follow the feather of Stuart tonight." (Chorus)


There's a man in a white house with blood on his mouth! If there's Knaves in the North, there are braves in the South. We are three thousand horses, and not one afraid; We are three thousand sabres and not a dull blade. (Chorus)


Then gallop, then gallop, by ravines and rocks! Who would bar us the way take his toll in hard knocks; For with these points of steel, on the line of Penn, We have made some fine strokes-and we'll make 'em again. (Chorus)


This rare and wonderful, American Civil War / Confederate Imprint Sheet Music is in very good to excellent condition - intact and sound with no evidence that it was ever bound in a Volume of collected Sheet Music. There is no tears, edge chipping, physical damage or repairs of any kind. There is some light soiling and some very light and scattered foxing as well as a single, small stain on the blank rear cover but overall this wonderful Confederate Sheet Music is well preserved and displays nicely. With a light professional cleaning and conservation it will certainly display in excellent++ condition.
