KM 106.2, issued when Mexico was under Spanish control, in the name of King Carlos IV. Silver crown, with the king on the obverse.
Silver coins of Mexico were legal tender in the United States until 1857, and the U. S. dollar was based upon the Spanish Colonial 8 reales coin (formal name: \"Peso de 8 reales\"). One real became known as one \"bit\"; this is why \"2 bits\" equals a quarter dollar.
One version of the basis of the dollar sign is that it evolved from the drawing of the two pillars with the ribbons on them.
While Louisiana was under Spanish control, the governor kept pleading for money from the governor of Mexico (New Spain). In 1783, he gathered up the available coins (mostly Mexico City 1783 coins), and sent them off on the El Cazador, which never arrived.
Because of the continued money troubles, Spain returned Louisiana to France, and Napoleon sold it to the United States. This shipwreck was definitely pivotal in American history!
The ship was found by a shrimp boat in the 1960s, when the net snagged on the wreck, and dumped a large number of silver coins on the deck.
