Beautiful, supple, and flawless matte red leather identical to the latest version Louis XIII packaging. It is crisply embossed, single-row red thread stitching, stiff magnetic closure (very small amount of placement visibility). Closed dimensions measuring 6.500" x 6.500" x 0.375", enclosed within a single sheet of rice paper packing. The front cover is center embossed with the iconic Louis XIII "Fleur-de-Lys" symbol as generated by Baccarat; 1.250" tall x 1.125" wide. Inside front cover is center embossed with a 4 line image: (L1) Fleur-de-Lys SYMBOL, (L2) "Louis XIII", (L3) "Rémy de Martin", (L4) Grande Champagne Cognac"; total imaging is 1.125" tall x 1.375" wide. Inside rear cover presents a 4.750" x 4.750" visible menu area (open window), accepting a 5.500" x 5.500" slide-in card stock (not included). The rear cover is completely blank and smooth, except the border stitching. This is the menu holder you would read if you were at a Rémy de Martin Estate event in Cognac, France. It is a perfect complement to the Louis XIII designer glasses, silver serving tray, votive candle holder, etcetera, culminating in the 'complete experience' that is Louis XIII. This is a refined product, and must be treated with great focus or the owner will damage it simply from light oil upon their fingers, or subjecting it to any weighted item upon it, which would leave a dent. Treat with great care and reverence, just like the Louis XIII you will imbibe. I rate this Louis XIII accessory as "Superlative" and gets 99 out of 100 points in my book. 1 point deducted as the single sheet protective rice paper is so thin that it easily tears upon first examination of product, even with care (as you are fighting against the draw of the magnet closure). I wish I had acquired 4 instead of just 2. As a bonus element of this Louis XIII accessory review, I highly suggest the following - Adam Carmer, arguably the most knowledgeable beer and spirits connoisseur in Las Vegas (he even teaches classes at UNLV on this stuff) was giddy for two reasons: He was able to offer Louis XIII for $100 a 1-Oz. shot (below cost) during a special invitation, and he’d come up with a tasting method that he felt kicked ass over any previous incarnation. As Carmer explains, the traditional tasting method is: 1. Look at it. 2. Smell it. 3. Taste it. But many people don’t get anything out of this process. “They just end up tasting alcohol,” Carmer says. So through research and meticulous experimentation, Carmer has come up with a method that turns standard tasting on its head a bit: 1. Make sure your palate is completely clean (wait 15 minutes after cleansing before any sipping). Make sure your nasal passages are clear. Do not smoke while sipping; you must wait until afterwards if you wish to have a cigar. Find a quiet, comfortable seat; preferably cool leather, with a low light level. 2. Do NOT smell the cognac before drinking. Take a small sip and let the liquid rest naturally in your mouth. Hold your head normally, mouth closed, and feel the cognac, by nature of gravity, drift down your jawline to the front of your mouth and the top of your tongue. Wait about 10 seconds. A burning sensation is normal, Carmer explains, as that’s the alcohol burning off, leaving you with pure taste. 3. From this sip, take SMALL swallows, letting the cognac take its time. Tearing up is a normal reaction during this period, he explains, encouraging you to relax and not to fight it. You should get at least 5-7 SMALL swallows per sip. 4. Once you’ve completely swallowed all the cognac, lift your glass and smell. You’ll find you no longer smell any alcohol, just the essence of the cognac, as it reveals its 40 to 100 year old tale of mystery and grace.Read full review
