The 80W/ch power rating is conservative, there's plenty of power for all but the most inefficient speakers. Has great build quality, a nice Phono preamp, 'CD Direct' and 'Pure Direct' buttons, nice remote and includes the Yamaha TopArt technology. The AM/FM tuner module used in this series was very sensitive and sounded great. Probably the best tuner module used in any receiver from around that period and certainly better than most that followed. This receiver was the heart of my system for many years until I splashed out and upgraded to separates (Rotel Integrated Amp & Marantz Tuner) in 2015. Couldn't part with it though, it's still in use in another system and still pulling in the weaker public FM stations with ease. The only thing I found it lacked was a HT bypass feature which is only relevant if you want to use the RX-596 as your front speakers amp in a HT system. Nevertheless, we still used it in this capacity but had to remember to set the volume control to a specific setting when using it in this way. The only real enhancement offered by the top-of-the-line RX-777 over this receiver was a little more O/P power. Yamaha were really at the top of their game at that point in time.Read full review

A great receiver for my application and probably more than I need, but I look forward to taking advantage of the headroom for future expansion. This is a 5.1 surround receiver, but I'm only using 2 channels. It's really very very nice and I actually feel a little bad because I didn't realize what it was until I got it and I probably should have paid more for it had the seller realized. Anyway, Yamaha makes great stuff and this is an example thereof.

I got this receiver because I had one just like it for about 13 years and was quite satisfied with it. The only issue I would say that I had with this model receiver, is that I found it necessary to use a separate equalizer with it as I could not get the proper amount of bass without the EQ. Toward the end of my old receiver life, the left channel would sometimes not play or "cut-out". Finally, it would not power up at all. That's when I sent for the replacement model. I would recommend this unit.
Great receiver! Very clean sound and plenty of power for most speakers. I have them hooked up to a pair of JBL 100's and they sound fantastic
