I was looking for something portable to take out on the patio, jam with friends and so on without lugging a 40lb speaker magnet and 50' extension cord everywhere. I also wanted something that sounds good at a volume that does not drive everyone else in the house crazy. This thing delivers on both accounts. It handles everything from Jack White to BB King to Floyd and it's pretty easy to dial in close to the right sound. All of that said - I paid $180 in a "Make an Offer" auction. I would not have paid anything close to the $450 MSRP on Yamaha's site or even the $300 they go for everywhere else. $250 and under and it's a no-brainer though. YMMV.

I guess I expected magic. two 3" speakers just cant handle any real volume nor can a modeling amp sound like a variety of tubes amps. there I said it. the amp is an amazingly good sounding practice amp for your bedroom or living room. the presets and effects all sound good. It can play loud enough to allow you to rock out in your bedroom. that is where it stops, here's what not to expect; headroom for loudish, clean playing. a real heavy distortion tone like a 5150. for it not to get really muddy and flappy in the bass. don't expect any ability to switch between presets on the fly like a channel switching amp, no foot switch. you can lean over and switch presets but it is for noodling, not jamming. If you stay within its limits you will be very happy. I, for example, use it every day. it is my go to practice amp. lastly, mine had a terrible 60 cycle buzz on any of the gain settings, I read about this on the internet but thought it wouldn't happen to me, I am still trying to reduce that buzz to make it more enjoyable to play with gain but have not eliminated it yet.Read full review

Yamaha has given guitar players a wonderfully diverse tool in the THR series of Modeling amps. This little amp has made me a much better player due to me playing a lot more, because it sounds so darn good. And, yes it does have the sound and pick attack of a tube amp, no doubt about it. I am just starting to use the computer options offered and the more I learn about it the more I like it. I was torn between the THR10 and the THR10C. I ended up reading every review I could find and decided the "C" probably fit my playing style better. I found a new one here on Ebay at a very good price and pulled the trigger on it. I love this great little amp. I keep looking for elves inside this thing because speakers this small shouldn't sound this good!!

So until recently, I just do isn't get the point of the Yamaha THR10. It looks kinda weird, its got teenie speakers, and it's a modeling amp - previous examples of which I've never been happy with. And, it's not particularly cheap - you can get a small tube amp for the same price. I also have access to all kinds of gear - everything from Line 6 to Fractal to vintage real-deal classic tube amps. Why bother with this weird little Yamaha then? Because it fills a need nonetheless of those other pieces do and sounds great doing it. It is just the right size and volume for near field at home playing, it's dead simple plug-n-play, it's got the perfect feature set, and it really does act very much like a tube amp - specifically the tube amps it implicitly models. I have my other gear in storage now. Get this amp. You will love it.Read full review

I have been playing guitar for 46 years, owned countless solid state and tube amps. After watching YouTube videos of this thing I had to try it. It sounds amazing, it reacts to your playing like a tube amp, and you can take it anywhere with batteries. This may sound crazy but the speakers sound like you are wearing headphones, they fill the room with sound. I recommend tweaking it with the sound editor on a computer, you can really dial in some amazing sounds.
