Even though Boss make newer more ' expensive' versions of their Harmonist, they are not that far in advancement then these older HR-2's ( which still can be pricey even at second hand prices)....this is still the "much" easier one to understand and work. The newer ones just offer more bells and whistles and complications of use...With these older HR-2's, you can't get every harmony note to be dead perfect due to deepness of chosen chords and notes and certain built in inherit flaws this unit has. ( and the newer versions improved little in this) but....with a little tweaking you can get some incredible 2 to 3 line harmonies going if you are willing to take the time and take notes on your settings. The minor keys are harder to work with. You really must pick the notes that work. Note (Bending in forbidden in minor keys lol, unless you really found a use for it) For instance...I can get a Brain Mays thing going but not in every key offered. If you have a good ear you will hear what will not and will work. ( add a delay pedal on top of it and your really in Queen land) I can also get within range of the double lead guitar part in Bad Company's 'Can't get enough of your love" "Cool"...Hint, to get these sounds both volumes were set at different levels, because the volume knobs also affect how deep and loud the harmony notes can be even though each Harmony knob has high and deep octaves. The Volume knobs kinda work along with the tones. You have to play with it to understand what I mean...but you will get it...and realize that can make a big difference in tone shaping. You will also find that you for instance you can play the chord G and find things in the Harmonist pedal played in the key of E or Em that will sound pretty interesting against a G chord. This alone well open up new avenues for you...Kinda like how G chord works with the E pentatonic scale for country music. So in short...don't expect to get everything you are thinking of in your head out of it...but as long as your practical and are not tone deaf...you can muster up some great pretty or evil sounding harmonies with the Boss HR-2 that will turn heads....Read full review
If you're looking for octaves then, you've found a decent pedal. I wouldn't recommend it for guitar harmonies. It just doesn't do well. There's also some lag or delay which is to be expected and not too much of a problem.

This pedal is completely amazing. I purchased this pedal after seeing the band "Real Estate" use one... Vintage-ish (only made 1994-1999) and works perfectly. The "key" toggle is a little rough but you can make due. I love the harmonizing effect as well as the detune chorus effect it makes (i think this is what Real Estate uses the pedal for...). The octave capabilities make it like three pedals in one!!
Great Buy it now price. Exactly what I wanted! Well done in the early nineties. I got a brand new RV5 for Xmass '10. My girlfriend didn't mind a bit but couldn't believe I would return it and buy a seventeen year old RV3 on Ebay. What's up lately Boss?
A discontinued Boss pedal, the HR-2 is a decent harmony pedal. Pretty nice octave up and octave down settings. The tracking for other harmonies (2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths) can be glitchy at times and sometimes have a small delay. I bought it to get some organ tones and when mixed with other modulation pedals it does a pretty good job. If you can find one for a nice price it's definitely an alternative to more expensive boutique octave pedals.
