I bought a used STR995 about 1 year ago with some reservations. I have owned a few of the STR models and they all went into "PROTECT" mode when pushed fairly hard. The price seemed fairly decent and at first I was only to purchase it so that I may sell it to someone else. But then I realized I paid a little too much to turn a profit. Up until then I was using a Harmon Kardon AVR320, and it performed admirably. It had some limitations however, it was complicated to use and was limited to the channels you could hook up. The power rating was accurate, and it lacked the punch I was expecting. To make a long story short, I hooked up the SONY and was pleasantly amazed! The hook up was simple because the user manual was very descript and well laid out. It has alot of functions and plenty of P O W E R ! ! ! I have 7 speakers and a powered sub woofer hooked up to it, and it cries out for more. I have to turn it up about 3/4 of the way to blow my hair back, but it does this with little effort. The internal fan doesn't kick in unless you are rock'in out for more than an hour. I would recomend the SONY-STR995 for an average joe who doesnt want to settle for mediocrity. I have owned more than 30 recievers, and I can assure you that this review is right on. Michael S. Myers ( owner operator of Average Joes Home Theatres)Read full review
I bought this receiver because of the component jacks for Hi-Definition. I still have the receiver it replaces, a STR-DE845, which has more bells and whistles. I was thinking that the higher model number of the 995 would give me an edge performance wise as with the case of Sony's other component, i.e DVD players, SACD players, etc. The higher the model number in a certain component, the more advance with newer technology. (Canon is GREAT with this--they put ALL of their know-how into the next model in the line-up whether the advanced or entry level!) It may be the "need to tinker with it more" learning curve, but there are, in my opinion, too many "input" buttons. There are TWO buttons that does almost the exact same thing! I'm trying to remember what one does and push another to get it to tailor the same for me and it undoes what I did with the other button. Gosh! The volume control. Something's not right here---to get a audible volume level, it needs to get up to 30 before you here anything. With the 845 you turn the volume up 1/4 of a turn and you are catching yourself to not turn it up higher! I've been buying Sony for years now, and with a Mensa IQ score of 160, several years of post graduate schooling, I'm pretty sure of what I'm doing. This unit doesn't have some of the decoding processes the 845 does, and maybe that's intentional. I kinda like seeing all those lights show up on the face screen when watching movies! Hmmmmm.........I'm thinking about buying an ES model. Better play with the 995 a lot more! I'm still a Sony enthusiast as I love their speakers and amps! I'll post again later.Read full review
While this reciever is not a top line model it performs like one. Giving great crisp sound with plenty of inputs and outputs. If you can find one used for around 100 bucks you will be very happy with your purchase.
Great sound and great value.
