One is naturally wary when deciding to purchase a "manufacturer refurbished" product. This is especially true in the computer world, and even more so for me. I also had never owned or worked with a Dell computer. So....I was surprised in a good way playing with my "new-old" Dell D630 for the last 4 days. My custom Dell came with Windows 7 Ultimate, MS Office 2007, enhanced processor, excellent video/audio, WIFI, 4 USB ports, SD slot, etc. The only real drawbacks are its weight and only 2 GB RAM. With the former, Dell is way off-base calling it "lightweight" in its product description. With only 2 GB RAM, you can't even run a program like Adobe Photoshop that requires 1.5 +. I needed Dell technical support, and their tekkie helped me despite the warranty expiry date in 09/2011. I needed support setting up my WIFI with my Comcast Xfinity personal network. Never had that happen before--real help--no runaround. Dell is my hero! Should have bought one long ago and highly recommend this laptop over other brands I have worked with--and that's a lot! Go, you Dell D630 5-year olds, go! Keep on comin' back! Recycle ReUsers! annieoqtRead full review
I like this rock solid laptop because it can be upgraded easily to match new PC systems costing two or three times as much. It has perhaps the best keyboard on a mobile system and also has great security. It's a business machine!/ Since most people do not really multi-task, but rather run multiple tasks one at a time - with other tasks standing by - its dual core processor is more than adequate. Typically there is one large task occupying one core, and a number of smaller support tasks running in the other core(s). Disk latency in this type of operation is really a bigger factor than the number of cores, or their speed./ The d630 runs 1080p HD video decompression smoothly - but if you are the type running heat seeking applications like cracking encryption keys, or doing personal weather forecasting, this is not the machine for you. Probably, no affordable notebook is!/ Remember two large cores are better than several small ones - as typically users are operating a central single threaded task that works best if it fits into a single core. The central task, however pushes all the support applets into the remaining cores. So you need a minimum of two. Unless you are running many compute intensive tasks, two cores are enough./ This laptop was originally locked with a BIOS password. Dell has a master password which can be generated from the service tag. I found a seller on eBay who has the key algorithm and provided a password for $1.50./ With 4gb of RAM installed, it easily loaded Windows 7 64-bit. All the drivers, save one, were in the Windows install disk or Microsoft's library already. This Notebook also had the Nvidia NVS graphics accelerator - Nvidia's website had the appropriate driver available for free download. Installation was a snap./ This is something to be aware of in a used laptop - the more of the model you buy - that are already installed - the more MS is motivated to insure compatibility on OS upgrades. And the more likely you are to find drivers, batteries, chargers and accessories. Dell sold zillions of these and service tutorials are all over youtube. There are people, who have upgraded to Win 8, but I had no desire to enter that quagmire./ The 64-bit OS, Office, Corel, Nero and utilities like antivirus, Winrar and Adobe apps for .pdf and flash were installed on a SATA Solid State Disk and the performance is on a par with a new laptop. The SSD cold Boots from power on in 25-30 seconds, versus 100 seconds on a 7200rpm electro-mechanical disk drive. Return from sleep is 5 seconds or less with the SSD. Web pages fill about 2-3 times as fast - downloads from the web are as much as 2x the speed. Obviously, a SSD is a good addition for this device - it gives the d630 a whole new "on steroids" character./ The d630 could be better with more than 4 USB ports, but a hub or docking station can fix that. I have about $120 in upgrades ($200 total). The machine performs as well as newer machines costing 2-3 times as much./ The Dell keyboard is excellent; the frame is a lightweight strong alloy; the covers are solid and the hinges are overdesigned. The Dell business laptop is durable enough to go another decade. I have 3 of these in service and picked up one more for spare parts - although most every part is available on eBay./ If you are tech savvy enough to support the machine yourself, one can save hundreds and still have a very fast system with several years left for less than the price of a sluggish netbook./Read full review
This is to all you smart people that has never bought a Dell LATITUDE. I have bought and sold over 200 Latitudes since 2001. I never call Dell. Don't give a review a Dell by their support. I am never going to call Dell. I can get enough info on the Internet without calling the manufacturer's website. I do use Dell's forums though at times. Now the D630 and D620, I have owned and sold over 65 of these models. With regards to Latitudes, I have seen these computers that I sold 8 years ago to customers and they are still using them. After a while they either needed a tuneup, a new reinstall of Windows or a new hard drive but they are still being used. I get compliments on Latitudes all the time because how long they last. Forget Dell- Inspiron, XPS, Studio or Vostro. Always buy Latitudes. I can probably be safe in saying that I am almost an expert on Latitudes. I buy at least one a month still. Some of the newer E series like 6400 or 6500 may not be as robust as the D series. There are many models of Latitudes and you can review them before you buy. If you saw what my wife does with her D630 you would be shocked at the workload she puts on it, just tons. She is an accountant. It still runs nicely too. So buy Latitude, ask questions before you buy if you have to. Do your research on any computer you buy though.Read full review
This is a great working computer - may not be the best for games and/or graphics, but for the work I do, it provides a stable platform and I already had the docking station and all the stuff I needed. Works great for me.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
I've bought 3 of these, and found them to be solid performers. With Windows 7, they operate at 64 bits on the net. I tried a tablet, and didn't like it. I prefer a screen no smaller than 14" and an actual keyboard. This is a great all around computer, with extra battery capacity if needed. Being a Dell, just makes it better!
