This a great, open-sounding mandolin! I chose this particular model due to the lack of tone bars. I think this design characteristic is one of the main reasons behind the wonderful tonal qualities. My particular specimen has an extremely tight-grained (some ribboning) spruce top and nicely flamed maple back and sides. I would rate the build quality as an A+. The sunburst is nicely done, but the finish is a little thick. So I would say about a B- on the finish. The inlays are nicely done, however, the binding work is a little sloppy. I would rate the binding work as a C-. That being said, the sound quality of this mandolin far outweighs any cosmetic shortcomings. As always, a good setup will bring out the best in any instrument.

This is the second Loar LM-700VS mandolin that we have purchased. I bought the first one for my son who played in our bluegrass band for four years. Our new mandolin player heard his mandolin and ordered this one just like it. These mandolins are awesome with lots of low “Gibson “ like sound. Great woody chop sound and no more tinny/ treble sounds. Get one - you will love it.

Easy to set up and great value for the price. No use or manufacturing flaws on the mandolin - could have been sold as new. Matches up with other F-style mandolins twice or three times the price.
