When it's all said and done, "Gilligan's Island" was nothing more than a piece of entertaining 'put your brain in a box' fluff. It was diverting but rarely laugh out loud funny. The network that produced it couldn't understand it, or its incredible success. It's a show that's almost so bad it's good. This telemovie, however, is exceptionally good. Full of "Gilligan" trivia and reenacted moments and anecdotes from the show's production years, and with a really brilliant cast of lookalikes playing the actors playing the characters. It probably sounds like the cheesiest thing possible, but the production values are high, the acting is excellent and the story it tells is just captivating.
This documentary explains the behind the scenes of this loved show. I found it more entertaining than the show. It is explains the what the studio handled the show. They used a set of younger actors to re-enact some of the key moments. Three of the surviving members of the casts share your memories of doing the show. The extras were not that impressive. Dawn Well narrates most of the show. It is worth seeing.
