Very Rare St. Patrick's Brand Citrus Original Label From Duarte, California:
The St. Patrick's Brand citrus label is one of the earliest from Duarte, California. It was a special brand, used for extra fancy Thompson's improved navel oranges, grown and packed by G.P. Fitz-gerald. This is a magnificent design with old English lettering and excellent use of color in religious art. There are shamrocks galore, snakes to bolster the legend of St. Patrick and the snakes of Ireland, and curiously, a lone bewildered frog at the bottom center. The St. Patrick's Brand is considered the creme de la creme of Duarte citrus labels. The lithographer is not identified. Captain Fitz-Gerald sold Mt. Olivet to my great-grandfather, William H. Baird. He was interested in citrus ranching and bought "Mt. Olivet", ranch, packinghouse, and the rights to the St. Patrick's Brand. There are only 5 original labels left. The label is in good condition for being over 100 years old. There is a crease in the label. Please see illustration 3.
