Up for sale we have a very rare and highly collectable, US Mint struck U.S. Army Department Marksmanship Second Class Silver Prize Medal. Acording to William K. Emerson's book "Marksmanship in the U.S. Army" only 160 of these prizes were struck by the US Mint and awarded between 1889 and 1902. This medal is struck in silver and weights in at 39 grams and is 38mm wide. The front depicts a US monogram, stacked rifles and parade helmet. The reverse shows a wreath around the edge and is engraved;

The medal retains its crossbar pin hanger that depicts a federal eagle obscuring the word DEPARTMENT. It is in very good condition for its age. There is one edge ding that I have pictured and a few light scuffs and scratches, (not bad for a 130+ year old medal). This is a fine example of the height of U.S. marksmanship prizes and would be the centerpiece of any collection.
