Mark Wayner (born Mark Weiner; 1888–1980) was a prominent Polish-born Jewish artist and caricaturist who spent the vast majority of his life and career in London. He is best known for his sharp satirical drawings and portfolios of contemporaneous political, artistic, and cultural figures.Life and BackgroundEarly Migration: Born in Łomża, Poland, his family immigrated to England in 1893 when he was a toddler to escape the Russian Pale of Settlement.London Roots: He was raised in London's East End and won an art scholarship to Birkbeck College.The Whitechapel Circle: He attended the Slade School of Fine Art (1909–1910) where he befriended fellow influential "Whitechapel Boys" artist Mark Gertler.Ben Uri Society: In 1915, Wayner became a founding member of the Ben Uri Art Society, which continues to archive and display his work today.Notable Work and AchievementsCelebrities in Caricature: He published two highly celebrated volumes of Celebrities in Caricature (1931 and c. 1940).
