Oct. 4, 1869 - Abner Doubleday Handwritten Letter Detailing Events During the Battle of Gettysburg - BeckettThough erroneously declared the inventor of baseball by the Mills Commission fifteen years after his death, Abner Doubleday lived a life seemingly ripped from a Hollywood script. Doubleday served as a captain at Fort Sumter, firing the first cannon to defend Fort Sumter on April 1, 1861, answering the Confederate barrage that opened the Civil War. For his heroic efforts, Doubleday dubbed himself "the hero of Sumter." Later, Doubleday served heroically at the Battle of Gettysburg, the turning point of the Civil War. There, Doubleday commanded the First Corps with 8,200 men. After the first day of fierce fighting, his force was reduced to 2,450, with reinforcements bringing the number under his command to 3,500. Major General John F. Reynolds was killed early in the battle, and command of the field fell to Doubleday. Doubleday's finest hour came on Cemetary Hill, where his men fought against an estimated force of 16,000 Confederate troops, receiving a wound to the neck during the ferocious battle. Though Doubleday strikes a more terse report of his actions in his handwritten letter dated Oct. 4, 1869, on Official Headquarters General Requitting Service stationary, he remains an American hero who rose above the smoke and chaos of war to help aid the Union in their defeat of the Confederates at Gettysburg.
