Introduced by Victor in 1901, the Type M was considered by Victor founder Eldridge Johnson to be the "King" of the Victor line-up and therefore was given the title "Monarch" by him. Johnson's Monarch featured a 10" turntable, a double spring motor, and an ornate solid oak cabinet with a tiered base accented with gingerbread trim.
Condition of this example is excellent, and it's a super clean west coast machine, with a beautiful Sherman Clay dealer's tag affixed to the side of the cabinet. The phonograph is original throughout and running well, as you can see and hear in the video I've posted above. Early brass motor and gearing. Governor is working properly, and the speed is steady. Plays 2 or more 10″ sides with a single winding.
Oak cabinet retains its original finish, and it's still smooth to the touch. Data plate is clean and legible. Corner columns and capitols are original and undamaged. No missing molding, no damaged trim.
Back-bracket enamel is original, as are the decorations, which -- as you can see -- retain their beautiful blue highlights. Decorations are still prominent, and the Japanned finish is still glossy.
Original mechanism, original turntable, original crank, original horn elbow, etc. Exhibition reproducer has a good diaphragm and is loud and dynamic.
Original Victor wood horn is likewise outstanding. Patent data is blind-stamped into the metal collar and still legible. Nipper decal is original, and it's still crisp and colorful. No damage, no repairs, and overall one of the nicest wood horns you’re likely to encounter. Better yet -- and as you can see in the photographs -- the horn's original finish is virtually identical in tone and texture to that of the phonograph, so you get a beautiful match, not an uncomfortable marriage.
I'll include with the phonograph an early, acoustically recorded 78RPM Victor record. If you get tired of listening to it, there are plenty of other titles available on and elsewhere. Hundreds of early them show up on on a weekly basis, and they typically sell just a few dollars each.PLEASE NOTE: This antique phonograph plays only antique shellac 78RPM records. It does not play at any another speed, and it does not play vinyl LPs. Just wanted to make sure that was clear.
I'm one of 's best known, most highly regarded sellers of collector quality phonographs. I've been sellingand shipping themfor more than 25 years. When you purchase an antique phonograph from me, you'll receive a phonograph that arrives safely because it's been carefully packed (byme, not by some well-intentioned but nonetheless confounded, doe-eyed teenager working at the UPS store who wouldn't know a phonograph from a fire extinguisher), and you'll receive a phonograph that includes thorough but easy-to-understand set-up and operating instructions, so you won't be left scratching your head, trying to figure out how it works. Sure, you can probably get a lower price from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your "bargain" arrives broken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able to put it back together, you'll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for.
