Van Gogh was actually in Paris and Antwerp in the 1880's, and the majority of his income came from painting miniatures and portraits (reference the Ministry of Van Gogh in Religion and Art, page 98). Although it was later a common practice to spuriously sign the names of famous artists on pieces such as these, Van Gogh didn't become a recognized name until well after he died and this set was produced during the period1880-1890 as documented by the Baccarat stamp used. The "Vincent" signature on these pieces compares nicely with known Van Gogh signatures and this alone makes this set highly desirable. It's unusual to findlargesets that are still complete and this one is just stunning.
