You are offerding on an original WWII (circa, 1942) P.O.W. pewter mug formerly with, Australian Private Edward Stanton, of the 2/19 battalion. The mug with an incised inscription: 'E. STANTON PRISONERS OF WAR CAMP CHANGI 1942' 'J.A. McAVOY' 'Mc', further incised with a beach scene overlooking mountains, palm trees and birds asseen in photos.
***Pte. Edward Stanton enlisted on April 7, 1941. He saw service in Malaya and Singapore before being captured in February 1942. Private Stanton was one of over 2,000 allied prisoners of war held in the Sandakan P.O.W. camp in North Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as part of E Force. The 500 Australian and 500 British POWs who made up E Force, left Changi on March 28, 1943, on board the S.S. DeKlerk arriving at Berhala Island on April 15, 1943. The POWs were held there until June 5, when they were taken by barge to Sandakan. The next day they were transferred to the 8 Mile Camp, which was about half a mile from the B Force compound. Private Stanton, aged 28, died as a prisoner of the Japanese on March 18, 1945.***
