Amazing anodized bluish glow!

After WWII there was a glut of aluminum. Italy had invaded Ethiopia in 1935 and taken all of its aluminum. Italian designers, under Mussolini's rule, were instructed and often mandated to utilize aluminum for furnishings, buildings and more. Gio Ponti at this time designed furniture for the Montecatini Corporation Headquarters.

Aluminum had already been used as the "miracle metal" of the 20th century and planes were heavy users of aluminum. When the war ended and plane production slowed to a trickle, most powers had excess aluminum stockpiles.

In the Americas, spun aluminum was seen after the Italians made it popular for delicate, articulating modern lamps. But Italy could use cast methods which consumed lots of aluminum, for special lamps and furnishings.

This cast, anodized and polished aluminum lamp is the byproduct of this perfect storm of events. A plentiful supply, new technologies that emerged after the war and the desperate desire for new, modern furnishings that would sculpt the new world - a world, hopefully, that would never see war again.

Its a simply fabulous design! Clean and pure! What would later be identified as the "flying saucer" shape is featured prominently in the aluminum design. "Flying discs" made the news in 1947 and designers took these cues and incorporated them into new furnishings!

An anodizing process, developed in the 1920's seals the aluminum with a thin coat of aluminum oxide. This results in a sensational sheen of blue that glows around the body of the lamp as light hits it. It's mid century aluminum eye-candy! Pictures don't do it justice. Being in the lamp's presence provides a fantastic feeling that is created by being near rare items with that certain "special" aura!.

This lamp is in great vintage condition. A single socket provides the illumination though a sleek white linen shade. Rewired in the 70s for US current. A really cool look is achieved and the lamp displays beautifully!

An incredibly rare, mid century treasure for the interior of your NY penthouse, Palm Springs atomic ranch or West Palm Beach estate! :)
