Original production Title Card from Pirates of Dark Water (1991), consisting of 4 Jumbo hand-painted cels (30" x 21") placed on the hand-painted title background. This is the artwork done for the final image of the Main Title, and is arguably the most iconic piece of artwork there is from this very well-made and entertaining series (even starring Jodi Benson of Little Mermaid fame as Tula) that was cut short prematurely. It has since developed a strong cult following with a lobby for a contemporary remake (Netflix? Amazon?).What makes this Title Card even more intriguing though, is the fact that art from the series is extremely scarce. With so little hitting the market over the last nearly 30 years, it seems likely that almost all the art has been destroyed.
The background has a nighttime image of a Mer mountain which morphs into the daytime image cel in the title sequence. The letters were digitally enhanced in the cartoon to give them a glimmering effect, and that is why the colors in the lettering do not exactly match what you see on the screen. But these cels are indeed the hand-painted portion of the lettering.
