Provenance
Private collection, Virginia.
This exceptional Haida transformation mask dates to approximately 1870 and originates from British Columbia. An almost identical example is found in the renowned Wellcome Collection, now housed at UCLA in Los Angeles. The Wellcome example entered that collection in 1936, providing an important point of comparison for this remarkable piece.
The two openings on the mask were designed to accommodate removable bird beaks, a distinctive feature associated with transformation masks. Examples of this type are highly sought after and are seldom encountered on the market.
With its strong form, excellent presentation, and documented comparable museum example, this is a rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding Northwest Coast artifact.
