A rare and substantial private archive of vintage Chinese matchbox labels / Huohua, offered as one complete collection.
This archive contains 2,300+ pieces of Chinese matchbox label ephemera, with an accompanying inventory recording approximately 2,391 items. The catalogue records cover 1877–1996, with the majority of the collection relating to 20th-century Chinese graphic, commercial and popular visual culture.
The collection is arranged by major themes, including animals and folklore, figures and identities, humanistic art, landscape, sports, flowers, and red culture. It includes material associated with many Chinese match factories and regional producers, including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhu, Chongqing, Beijing, Dali, Nanjing, Kunming, Tianjin, Shantou, Changsha, Wuhan, Zunyi and others.
Highlights include dragons, phoenixes, birds, butterflies, zodiac animals, classical literature, Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dream of the Red Chamber, Journey to the West, ethnic minority imagery, sports events, Olympic-related designs, Chinese landscapes, architecture, Dunhuang imagery, traditional painting, flowers, and revolutionary / red culture material.
This is not a small mixed lot, but a carefully preserved and catalogued family collection. According to family provenance, many pieces were collected and preserved by earlier family members during their original period of circulation, which helps explain their very good overall condition for age. Matchbox labels, known in Chinese as “Huohua”, were one of the most widely circulated forms of everyday graphic design in modern China. They functioned as miniature printed images, combining commercial branding, folk belief, political messaging, education, entertainment, sports culture and art reproduction. As a group, this archive offers a rare visual timeline of Chinese popular design across more than a century.

Pre-owned vintage collection, preserved in albums. Most pieces appear to be in very good condition for their age.
