An extremely rare, fascinating and significant MONTBLANC N°12 ROUGE et NOIR "Goliath" Black Hard Rubber Safety Filler Fountain Pen
The fountain pen is made of black hard rubber, barrel imprinted "ROUGE ET NOIR / ORIGINAL PATT APPL", no imprint on cap, turning knob marked "12 M" with breather hole at bottom, rare horizontal knurled-style chasing to inner cap (this style was soon replaced by the more commonly seen vertical chasing), silver pin mounted inside of cap, large red captop star.Fountain pen length 153mm when closed. Massive gold heart-vent nib engraved "SIMPLO PEN CO 12", wonderfully flexible. Feed is slotted to accommodate the silver pin inside the cap.Fine to very fine condition, black hard rubber patinated and clean with just a few scratches, barrel imprint quite rubbed and only partially legible, captop star bright red and unblemished, nib lustrous, safety mechanism functions smoothly, section is glossy black. Fountain pen probably will need a new cork seal in order to write.The pen looks original but the parts are from different periods, which is definitive not very unusual, because after the WWI you took what you had and sold it. The N°12 Nib is probably from 1910's imported from the US. The cap shape is probably from 1914-1920, the red Star was mostly offered in Italy, but should have a cap imprint Rouge & Noir. May be this one has been erased with time or was replaced later.
To conclude, this pen has been probably produced around 1921-1922 using an old n°12 nib. The n°12 safety filler was extremely low selling product and at that time, this product was only produced tailor made on demand.
