AboutPrince Valiant, Hal Foster and John Cullen Murphy
The legendary Sunday comic stripPrince Valiantwas created by the iconic Hal Foster in 1937 and still runs today, 86 years later, in approximately 300 newspapers. Over 4,500 weekly strips have been published. Hal Foster was one of the most respected and influential artists to ever work in newspaper strips. Foster was the first artist to work on theTarzanstrip and after a wildly successful run, he moved on to his own creation,Prince Valiant, in 1937. Foster's realistic, high adventure style was one of the primary influences on the artists who would spawn the Golden Age of comic books and Foster is ranked among the greatest artists to ever work in the medium.

In 1970, Foster invited established comic strip artist John Cullen Murphy to collaborate with him on the strip. According to multiple sources, Foster would do the scripts and would give a nicely penciled layout for Murphy to complete. The offered example from 1972 comes from this era. John Cullen Murphy drew the boxing comic stripBig Ben Boltfrom 1950 to 1978. He drewPrince Valiantfrom 1970 to 2004. Foster would retire from the strip entirely in 1980 and Murphy would continue to do the art until 2004, when he retired just before he passed away. Tom Yeates, who comic book fans know from his work onSaga of the Swamp Thinghas drawn the strip since 2012.
