You are offerding on one of the most interesting moments in United States History from 1697. This is an original document from the time of the Puritan law that led to the Salem witch trials just a few years earlier. The document is dated 1697 Taunton, Massachusetts. Two people have been put in front of the court for the crime of living together unlawfully. The document is signed by Joseph Church (b 1638). Mr Church's grandfather (maternal) was on the Mayflower in 1620 and his father on the Whittier expedition that landed in 1630 north of Plymouth Rock.
This bond descries the penalty for said crime and is a rare example from this time period in excellent shape. It also reflects the hysteria and non-tolerance and "shaming" from neighbours that led to the Salem trials only a few miles North of Taunton. The document s about 6x7 inches, small archival acid free tape repairs on the back at small split lines and good overall condition for being 323 years old. Interestingly, Taunton England was one of the hearts of the England witchcraft trials in 1622.
