This is an authentic and extremely rare Artist Proof Maki-e Fountain Pen from Bexley!This was the only Maki-e to be produced by Bexley. Sixteen Maki-e were completed by the Bexley Pen Company in 2008, and no more will be made. This Maki-e is the Dragon clutching the Mother of Pearl Orb.Maki-e literally translates to "sprinkled picture", a technique developed in Japan over a thousand years ago.The Maki-e artist uses small soft brushes and tiny bamboo tubes to apply fine powders of pure gold, pure silver, and alloys to create an image in Urushi lacquer.Once hardened, the extraordinarily durable Urushi forms a protective coating of the surface on which it is applied. It takes Urushi one year to achieve maximum hardness and durability. Maki-e art is designed to endure hundreds of years without fading or wear.The Maki-e art includes the artist's signature and unique production code.This one of a kind Artist Proof has no production number, it is hand marked AP.The Maki-e artist's signature is in traditional Japanese.
This Bexley Maki-e Poseidon was manufactured in the U.S.A., then sent to Japan to renowned Master Maki-e artist Takashi Kokoro, where the image was hand created in traditional fashion. After the curing period, the Poseidon was returned to Bexley for final assembly.
This one of a kind Bexley Maki-e Poseidon - artist proof "The Dragon" is the firstof only 16 maki-e ever to be produced by Bexley. It is equipped with the versatileBexley 14K two tone Solid Gold Factory Stub Nib.Stub nibs accomplish line variation by virtue of its nib shape. The flattened tip of the stub nib lays down a broad downstroke and a thinner line horizontally.
To show some of the color effects, photo 6 shows the Mother of Pearl Orb in soft light, photo 7 is in bright white light, and photo 8 is taken in daylight.
