1871; 66, Old Broad Street, London, November 21st.
SIR JAMES ANDERSON Captain of The GREAT EasterN & Telegraph laying under the Atlantic Ocean.
A fine 4 page letter to Primrose and Gordon, Lawyers in Dumfries regarding the settlement with Mr Newbigging as to Feus (Land Tenure)from Sir William Maxwell of Cardoness. and concerns the building of Sir James Andersons New house at Kirkconnel Lea, Near Glencaple, his wish to postpone building due the dispute, and that he is going to Rome for Six weeks

Arguably one of the most unique properties in Scotland, Kirkconnell Lea in Dumfriesshire is a country house imbued with a nautical flavour far in excess of the more usual porthole windows or jaunty seafaring bathroom accessories.

The property was originally built in 1872 by Sir James Anderson, captain of Brunel\'s masterpiece the Great Eastern, the ship responsible for laying the transatlantic cable. His influence is much in evidence throughout, with grounds laid out on eight different levels as per the decks of the Great Eastern and all manner of curios such as a castellated folly, \'\'companion way\'\' stairway and a globe sundial showing times in different parts of the world. But his most visually striking legacy is a shell grotto and ammonite balustrade, the latter made from giant shells brought back from Sir James\' travels.

Sir James also chose an idyllic position; with spectacular front-facing views across the Nith Estuary to Criffel beyond and across the Solway to the Lakeland Hills, while a hill to the rear provides shelter. From the turret window of the master bedroom,

The view is reputed to be unbroken by land all the way to The Falkland Islands. In addition to the outstanding gardens, Kirkconnell\'s 3.16 acres also include an area opposite the house known as the Merse which is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Scottish Natural Heritage due to its population of Natterjack Toads. And with Caerlaverock Nature Reserve nearby, the area is a haven for wildlife.

Sir James Anderson (1824–1893) captained SS Great Eastern on the laying of the Transatlantic telegraph cable in 1865 and 1866.

Anderson was born in Dumfries in south west Scotland and educated at the academy there.

Anderson captained Great Eastern, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, on the transatlantic telegraph cable laying voyages of 1865 and 1866. He was later managing director of the Eastern Telegraph Company, which became the largest submarine cable firm in the world.
