Extremely rare set of undiscovered early-1850s daguerreotypes ofMary Anna Longstreth and her sister Susan Longstreth. It appears they were photographed in the same sitting. at the Philadelphia studio of Frederick DeBourg Richards, 179 Chestnut St.
The Longstreth sisters were Quaker educators, known as the "Quaker Ladies". They were social reformers, abolitionists and educators founding a school in Philadelphia.
(From online) Mary Anna was heavily involved in the Underground Railroad, in the mid 1850s she was seized by an anti-abolition, pro-slavery mob and brought to Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia to be hung with other prominent Philadelphia abolitionists, and was only saved from death by the arrival of Pennsylvania Militia troops.
These 1/6 plate daguerreotypes are in excellent antique condition, the only issue being that one of the case covers are separated. The note is included.
