A tragic epilogue to twenty years of friendship, collaborations, and poetic creativity, René Char writes a poignant letter to Paul Éluard, who is ill, weeks before his death.

"My dear Paul, I learn from Yvonne Zervos that your health is causing you painful trouble. I feel great sadness, and "This revolt of my youth against injustice or fatal comes back to me because of you, because of this affection which I devote to you so ancient that it seems to me the very feeling of friendship and poetry" ; Over all obstacles.

If I can help you with anything please let me know: I’ll hurry. I don’t know Dominique, your wife, but I know from those who love you, that no one better than her, can heal you, help you, heal you.””

Suffering from angina for over two months, Éluard was struck down by a heart attack on the morning of November 18, 1952, alongside his wife Dominique. It had just finished Uninterrupted Poetry II, to be published the following year, illustrated with Picasso’s portrait of the poet.
