Douglas Chaffee original science fiction rocket crash painting, 1968.
This original painting by science fiction artist Douglas Chaffee (1936 - 2011) appears to have been a preliminary for the Frederik Pohl magazine "Worlds of If," Volume 18, Number 8, August 1968.
The painting depicts survivors of a rocket crash on a colorful but ominous alien landscape. Mixed media on paper, signed "Chaffee" in the lower right corner. The painting measures approximately 7 1/2 inches high by 5 1/2 inches wide. It is permanently mounted on a piece of Crescent board, the overall size is approximately 9 inches high by 6 3/4 inches wide.
The artwork is in excellent condition, the crescent board has a little wear and two staple holes in each corner. This does not encroach on or effect the artwork.
For reference I am attaching an image of the final magazine cover. This is for reference only, the magazine is not included in the sale.
The pencil notes on the reverse were added in 2002.
