A superb example of early 19th-century German Judaica, made by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Borcke, this Hanukkah lamp, crafted in Berlin circa 1817-1819 embodies the elegance and refinement of the period’s silverwork. Fashioned entirely from silver, the lamp stands on four stylized, splayed legs that lift a thick, rectangular base with a commanding presence and weight. The upper front portion of the base features a hinged lid that opens to reveal eight deep, rectangular oil wells. Each well is topped with a protruding wick holder, designed to extend outward gracefully in perfect symmetry and balance.Rising behind the base is a dramatic and highly ornate backplate, executed in masterful repoussé and chasing.
