This BLACK WARE WATER JAR WITH SCALLOPED LID(2016) is by Russell Sanchez of the SanIldefonso Pueblo. The traditionally hand coiled water jar features two rows of Heishi beads, made of shell and turquoise by Valerie and Joe Calabazas of Santo DomingoPueblo. There are scalloped indentations around base and a pie crust design around the lid. The jar was fired outside and polished to perfection. Russell Sanchez (1963- ) was born on the San Ildefonso Pueblo in Northern New Mexico, where he continues to live today. Sanchez started to make pottery when he was 12. He cites his aunt, Rose Gonzales, and Dora Tse Pe, as early influences. Each of his masterful pieces is hand-coiled, stone polished, etched, inlaid, designed and fired. Today, his work is widely accepted as among the very best contemporary Native American pottery; unique, in part, due to his use of different materials, such as beads and turquoise, are incorporated into his work, while still using traditional firing techniques.
Since 1978, Sanchez has won numerous awards and honors in juried shows, including:
  • Best of Division at the Heard Museum Indian Market, Phoenix, Arizona
  • Best of Division at SWAIA (Southwestern Association for Indian Arts) Santa Fe Indian Market
  • Feature article in Native People's Magazine (Fall 2007)
  • 2011 Tony Da Award for Pottery, Santa Fe, New Mexico
  • 2017 Recipient of the Governor's Award for Fine Arts, State of New Mexico, Santa Fe, New Mexico
  • 2019 Best of Pottery,SWAIA (Southwestern Association for Indian Arts) Santa Fe Indian Market
His works are in the permanent collections of the Millicent Rogers Museum (Taos, New Mexico), Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (Santa Fe, New Mexico), Museum of Natural History (Los Angeles, California) and the Smithsonian Institution (Washington D.C.), as well as numerous private collections.
