🌟 RARE 1873 Buffalo Soldier 9th U.S. Cavalry Muster Roll - Signed by MOH Winner Corporal Clinton Greaves

This is an exceptionally rare and historically important partially printed document (DS, 2PP, large folio) comprising theMuster Roll and Pay Roll for the 9th U.S. Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers), Company C, for the period of November 1 to December 31, 1873.

This document is certified by an attached descriptive clipping detailing its incredible significance: it issigned by more than 55 Buffalo Soldiers, includingMedal of Honor Winner Corporal Clinton Greaves, who signed with his "X" mark on the Pay Roll. The roll is also signed numerous times by the company commander,Lt. Henry H. Wright, who served alongside Greaves in the action that earned him the Medal of Honor in 1877.

Documents signed by Buffalo Soldiers, especially those listing dozens of names from this historic regiment during the Indian Wars period, are extremely scarce. Only 18 Black soldiers won the Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars. This primary source material is highly sought after by collectors of military history, African American history, and American West artifacts.

Buffalo Soldier MOH Winner 1873 RARE DS

A great9thCav muster roll signed by more than 55 buffalo soldiers including medal of honor winnerClinton Greaves. January 24, 1877 Greaves was detailed as part of a small detachment to persuade a band of 40-50 renegade Chiricahua, Warm Springs and Mescalero apache Indians to surrender. The soldiers were surrounded and as they tried to break free the shooting dissolved into vicious hand-to-hand fighting. "Corporal Clinton Greaves, in the center of the combat, fired his carbine until it was empty and then swung it like a club, knocking aside Apaches to bash a gap through the circle for his comrades. Meanwhile the other troopers continued to shoot, and five apaches fell dead before the detachment rode out of the opening that Greaves had cleared. Lt. Wright (Also has signed this document numerous times) and Corporal Greaves each killed one Indian while privates Epps and Mackado dropped three more. The Indians withdrew to higher ground and continued pouring fire upon Wright and his men." This is a partly printed DS, 2PP, large folio, Roma TX, December 31, 1873. Muster roll for the months of Nov. And Dec. 1873 signed by Greaves with his "X". Several other buffalo soldiers signed in like manner. Partial center fold separation, otherwise in excellent condition. Ft. Bayard, NM, has erected a monument to Clinton Greaves. I can not stress too much how rare buffalo soldier MOH material is. There were only 18 Black MOH winners in the Indian Wars.

Clinton Greaves was a U.S. Army Buffalo Soldier awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism during the Indian Wars in New Mexico in 1877, where he single-handedly created an opening in attacking Apaches by using his carbine as a club to allow his comrades to escape. Born enslaved, he served with the 9th Cavalry Regiment, received the medal in 1879, and is honored by a historical marker in his hometown of Madison, Virginia, and a former U.S. Army base in South Korea named Camp Greaves.
