Edna Vogel (b.1901-d.1953) studied weaving with Loja Saarinen and Marianne Strengell at Cranbrook Academy in the late 1930's and early 1940's.
Approximately 38" X 60".This rug is not signed, though I can see where the label has gone missing on the reverse.I have at least one other textile sample with an Edna Vogel paper label purchased at the same Estate Sale.
I purchased this rug about 20 years ago at the Saint Louis Estate Sale of Edna Vogel's relative (I think Attorney Brother) that lived on Flora Place near the Missouri Botanical Garden.
Edna Vogel's rugs and textiles were featured in an article in Interiors Magazine from the late 1940's. This article highlights Vogel's textiles for Diamond Dealer Harry Winston's New York Penthouse apartment. One of the rugs pictured in the article is very similar to this rug offered here. As I recall, Vogel based her design on a crystal pattern magnified under a microscope. I will find the article in my files and update this entry with more info!
Vogel's Rugs, Textiles, Ceramics, and Metalwork were recently Featured in "Saint Louis Modern", the 2016-17 FeatureExhibit at The Saint Louis Art Museum which focused on Mid Century Modern Design.
I truly believe these Edna Vogel pieces belong in the Finest Mid Century Modern Collections or in the Museum Collections of Cranbrook Academy, or The Saint Louis Art Museum, or another worthy Institution featuring American Modern Design (MOMA, The Met, etc.) These works are as good as they get with direct provenance to The Artist and Cranbrook Academy.
Vogel also studied Ceramics with Maija Grotell at Cranbrook Academy in the 1940's. Maija and Edna are pictured together in theCranbrook Book. Vogel's pottery is clearly "Student ofGrotell" or "Studio of Grotell" as you will see. Edna Vogel's pottery isall signed "E.V." and signed with "C encircling A" for Cranbrook Academy. Ms. Vogel studied Ceramics with Maija Grotell and Metals with Harry Bertoia at Cranbrook in the 1940's. Can you imagine?
Edna Vogel's story is an interesting footnote to American Modernism. Ms. Vogel wove the rugs for Frank Lloyd Wright's "Gregor Affleck House" in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, not far from Cranbrook. Edna also wove rugs for Architect Albert Khan and his family as well as for New York Diamond Dealer Harry Winston's Park Avenue apartment. Winston's Vogel rugs were featured in a 1949 National Design Interior Magazine. Unfortunately Ms. Vogel's career was cut short as she died of smoke inhalation from a fire in her South Salem New York textile studio home in 1953.

"As Is" "As Found" Textile Rug by Edna Vogel. I have not had this rug cleaned by a Museum Textile expert. Rug is in very good condition but could benefit from proper curatorial inspection, cleaning, and conservation. Probably should be professionally mounted and framed or simply enjoy "As Is"
