This artwork originates from the family of CharlesSteinbacher, who served as Art Director for the George Moll Agency from1936–1968. During that span, Steinbacher oversaw the entire production of Gum,Inc.’s and Bowman Gum’s greatest trading card issues, ranging from thelegendary 1938 "Horrors of War" series to the 1950’s Bowman baseballand football issues. A gifted artist whose talent was discovered as a bedriddenchild recovering from polio, his ability to create, fine tune and finish thevolumes of artworks necessary for each card issue made him a master of hiscraft and legendary among his peers. This presentation would have been lost hadit not been for an auspicious in-house discussion that led to Steinbacher'spossession of this amazing piece. Asfate would have it, the artforHorrorshad beenscheduled for disposal, and it was, almostquite literally, pulled from the trash and saved from destruction by Mr.Steinbacher. This one-of-a-kind reliccame to light once more in the early1990's, long afterSteinbacher's passing. Thisitem has beenencapsulated by PSA. Presented is a piece of unique original art created forthe R68 Horrors of War series for Gum Inc., whichdebuted in1938.
Thegallery ofgraphic depictions ofwar-inflicted fatalities reveals the bloody conflicts that surrounded theevents of World War II.The illustrations present the reality andinhumanity of the battlefield inrich colors that translated intocompelling detail on the all-time classic Horrors of War gum cards.Few,if any, trading card productions had the social impact that this seriesdelivered. Readersmarveled at the series' entire range of dire concernsand gross atrocities, lending credence to the mantra stated on thereverseof each card, "Toknow the HORRORS OF WAR is to wantPEACE."
