Royal House Antiques
Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for salethisfine, 1834 dated silk-work / stump-work sampler made during the reign of King William IV in an accompanying Rosewood framewith a later gallery label where it was sold some 30 years ago
Worked in wool and silk on a fine linen ground, using a variety of stitches including petit point. The sampler features a decorative meandering floral border and a castle scene, with attractive period colours including green, cream, pale green, pink, gold, olive green, grey, magenta and brown.
The sampler incorporates the verse entitled “CONFIDENCE IN GOD”:
“All that spring with bounteous hand scatters o’er the smiling land All that liberal autumn pours from her rich o’erflowing stores These to thee my God we owe source whence all our blessing flow And for these my soul shall raise grateful vows and solemn praise Should thine altered hands strain the early and the latter rain Blast the opening bud of joy and the rising year destroy Yet to thee my voice shall raise in grateful vows and solemn praise And when every blessing flowers love thee for thyself alone.”
Signed and dated, although part of the signature is now indistinct: “Age 11 AD 1834 Work’d at Mrs Bond’s West Derby”
Presented in an old frame with gilt slip and glass. The sampler is stitched to linen over a wooden stretcher frame with card backing and brown paper dust cover.
This piece is much rarer than a normal sampler having stumpwork incorporated all over, the 17th Century examples of this type of work sell in the tens of thousands of pounds
Condition wise the piece is period perfect, it has normal age and use related patina but its much better than normal, the colours are alive and vibrant
