Antique Billhook, Cleaver, Medical Instrument, Gardening Tool ? c. 1564 You might ask why I don’t seem to know what this is, but I seem to know the age. I have a copy of Klaus Marquardt’s “Eight Centuries of European Knives, Forks, and Spoons” it is one of the best books on the subject that I know of. In it there is a set of 5 tools one of which is very similar to this one. The book says the experts don’t agree on what the set is for: hunting, serving, gardening, or medical uses, etc. Some of the sets have bone saws, bodkins, etc. Klaus came to the conclusion they were for hunting and serving. The maker’s mark of theirs is very, very similar to this one which is a hallowed out mark filled with copper or another non-ferrous metal. It looks something like a bear wearing a crown. Their set has two billhooks, the larger is 31.3 cm long. This one is 31.4 cm long. and has similar engraving on gilded parts. I think it is obviously done by the same hands. Theirs also bears the date 1564. Admittedly theirs has a fancier handle and the gilding has survived in better state. But this is the only one I know of on the market. The blade has 2 chips on the cutting edge and a crack that can be seen on the left near the edge in the second picture of the markers mark.
