Manuscript Document Signed: "Manuel Antonio Martinez" in iron gall ink. 12½x8¼. Fully Translated in English: "Manuel Antonio Martinez y Diaz. Lieutenant Colonel. Chief of the Habana Cavalry Regiment. I certify: that the Captain of the Liberation Army Jose Francisco Lama y Osuna served in the years of 1896 and 1897 under my immediate command for eighteen months in this Regiment. During that time he participated in more than fifty combats and in the most dangerous times I had the satisfaction to always see him by my side serene and undaunted and fighting the enemy with extraordinary bravery. The already mentioned Captain Lama due to his courage, honesty and zeal in the fulfillment of his tasks, has deserved the highest consideration and praises from me and from all the compatriots that know him and recognize him. So, I have the pleasure to consign him in Fatherland and Liberty. Guanajuay, Campsite 'Lucia' on October 11, 1898. Manuel Antonio Martinez." Manuel Antonio Martinez was a Lieutenant Colonel who fought for the liberation of Cuba from the Spanish Colonial Authorities and who commanded the squadrons A, B, C and P in Matanzas, Habana and Pilar del Rio. Signer merits for further research. Sealed. Multiple worn mailing folds. Staple marks on verso. Soiled and toned. Ink notations (unknown hand) on front and verso. 1½-inch separation at upper middle fold. Right upper edge lightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
