Wasco, Lower Columbia River" Wedding Vail / Headdress composed of Dentalium shells; Headress
23" x 14" Frame 28.75" x 20"
NOTES: "Turn of the century Wasco, Lower Columbia River" Wedding Vail composed of Dentalium shell, Indian Head and Chinese coins, Czechoslovakian beads and elk hide. This piece was made by a family member for the bride, this was used and reused generation after generation. The shells were collected off the coast of Vancouver Island and fished out by1890.The Wasco people were unique in that they were a 10,0000 year old culture, intact who resisted the NW Coast Style and the strong N. California influence and maintained their own wonder unique style."
The Wasco-Wishram are two closely related Chinook Indian tribes from the Columbia River in Oregon. Today the tribes are part of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs living in the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Oregon and Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation living in the Yakama Indian Reservation in Washington.
PHOTO: " A Wishham Bride, ca 1910 the Wishham, a Chinookan Tribe also known as the Wishram or Tlakuit, occupied the north bank of the Columbia River in Washington five miles above and below the Dalles River. With one of the best locations on the northwestern coast for fishing and trading, this prosperous tribe had an unlimited supply of fish, particularly salmon, for its own use and for barter. This young bride's heavily beaded deerskin dress, shell beads necklaces, dentalium shell pendants and ornate headdress indicate her families position and wealth.Headdresses consisting of shells, shell beads, commercial beads and Chinese coins were worn on special occasions by girls between the age of puberty and their marriage.Preliminary negotiations for a marriage began when a messenger from the suitor's family promised the girl's father a certain price for her.Once the price was agree on, gifts were formally presented by the bridegroom's family to the bride's family, followed by a series of five feasts, beginning at the bride's home."
