One of Oscar Wilde’s most famous portraits.

Invited to present a series of lectures on the theme of Aesthetics and the Decorative Arts, Oscar Wilde arrived in the United States by the SS Arizona on January 3, 1882, for a scheduled four-month tour." To the U.S. Customsman greeting him on in New York, Wilde states:" "I have nothing to declare but my genius."

Upon arrival, Oscar Wilde visited the studios of Napoleon Sarony, one of America’s hottest photographers. The latter took about twenty photographs of Wilde, in different poses, in different costumes, revealing all the dandyism of the young British author.

In this portrait, Wilde holds a copy of his collection Poems (1881) and is dressed in a fur he cared very much about and which his brother had to sell when he was imprisoned: "I wore her all the trip to America, she attended all my premieres, she knows me perfectly and I really want to find her again" (Pleiade, pp. 94-95).

The tour was a great success and eventually spanned an entire year, over one hundred and forty lectures, taking him all the way to Canada.""
