1755 Antique Judaica German Circumcision Cup Gilt Silver Beaker Jewish Germany:
$10000.00
inches high, 2.9 inches wide. Hallmark of Johann III Mittnacht of Augsburg, between 1753 and 1755. In mint condition, with no damage, no repairs, no dents or splits or dings. All the gold wash both on the outside and the inside of the cup is intact. Absolutely incredible period Hebrew engraving of a style done specifically on 18th century Jewish ceremonial objects in Germany, the Hebrew says "This is Cup of Blessing". This is one of a matching pair of cups for the circumcision ceremony, the other cup would have said in Hebrew "This is Cup of Metzitza". Usually these German circumcision cups were bowl shaped that would fit into each other but there are museum examples of small footed cups like this that were also used as circumcision cups. If I had the missing Metzitza cup, as you can see by the Sotheby's prices, a pair would be $25,000 easy, likely $30,000, because of the extremely high quality of the Hebrew engraving and the condition, including the intact gilding.
Pickups / examinations are welcome, I'm in New York City.
