For sale is a spectacular circa 1875 Victorian Eastlake style picture frame.
From an old family estate in Westchester County. This hung along with two other similar Eastlake frames with ancestral portraits by Albert Abendschein.
Please see our store for the other similar frames.
We have sold many Eastlake style frames, and this is certainly amongst the best that we've ever come across.
The frame with absolutely exceptional richly colored faux bois rails in a stunning grain painted burl wood pattern which is sandwiched between two layers of ebony filets. Then to a superb lemon gold gilded corn cob and husk pattern surrounding band and then stepped down to a thin bead and bush filet and finally to a lemon gilt sight edge. The back edge and parts of the inner bands also in lemon gilding.
The corners with a fabulous fleur-de-lis style decoration, and then with exceptional scrollwork of leaf and berries all with inlaid gold gilding.
The frame in the 19th century portrait picture standard rabbet size of 25 x 30"
While this was used as a portrait frame, this frame would look spectacular with a piece of mirror glass and especially with a piece of antiqued mirror glass.
Condition: This is an antique picture frame and it's going to have some areas of age appropriate wear and losses. Even so it is in spectacular condition for age. The frame with some areas of gesso chip/loss. Gilt loss. We have taken detailed pictures of most of these areas for your consideration. Some normal tarnishing to the lemon gilded silver leaf. And some areas of loss to the outer edges.
Structurally speaking, the frame is in excellent condition.
NOTE: THESE PICTURES WERE TAKEN OUTDOORS IN NATURAL SUNLIGHT. THE FRAME WILL APPEAR DARKER IN INDOOR ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING AND LOW LIGHT AREAS.

This frame came from the William Gramm picture frame shop that was on 1, 3, and 5 Marion St. in lower Manhattan in New York City. Today that street is no longer in existence. It was part of Orange St. and ran from Broome St. north and then just beyond Prince St.
Today this is the SOHO neighborhood. The picture frame shop began in about 1865.
The label was on the back paper, dust jacket on the frame, but has been removed. We did take a picture of it prior to it crumbling
This frame is probably circuit 1875 in age. There was some inscription on the matting with the date of 1876 so we assume the frame is close to that timeframe.
