John Stuart Mill Biography

John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) was a British philosopher, political economist, civil servant, and Member of Parliament whose work became foundational to modern political and social philosophy.

Educated intensively from childhood by his father, philosopher and economist James Mill, he became associated with the Utilitarian movement of Jeremy Bentham while still young. Mill later developed a more sophisticated conception of utilitarianism emphasizing individuality, intellectual freedom, human development, and personal liberty.

His 1859 work On Liberty remains one of the most influential defenses of freedom of thought and expression ever published. Mill argued that society should interfere with individual liberty only to prevent harm to others—a principle that continues to shape political and legal debate.

Mill was equally influential as an economist. His Principles of Political Economy became one of the standard economic texts of the Victorian age.
