Prince Ernst August II was the son of King George V of Hanover. After the defeat of Langensalza against Prussia and the annexation of the Kingdom of Hanover in 1866, he accompanied his father into exile in Austria. Emperor Franz Joseph appointed him colonel in the Austrian army.
