**Full Description:**

A distinctive pre-Columbian Mississippian pottery vessel modeled with an integral bird effigy.

The vessel has a broad globular body surmounted by a sculptural bird form that incorporates the neck and opening into the avian body. The bird features a projecting beak, circular modeled eyes, and swept-back wings framing the vessel mouth. The overall form is compact and balanced, with the effigy integrated directly into the structure of the vessel rather than applied as a simple decorative element.

The surface is hand-burnished and ranges from warm reddish-brown to darker brown and black areas created by firing variation. Visible polishing marks, surface deposits, abrasions, and localized wear are consistent with archaeological ceramic material.

Bird imagery held important symbolic associations within Mississippian culture and appears on a variety of effigy vessels and ceremonial objects. This example is conservatively attributed to the Mississippian cultural tradition of the central and southEastern United States, likely dating approximately AD 1200–1500.
