This 206-yr-oldtall-case/grandfather clock (1820) is featured in the Nov/Dec 2012 issue ofNAWCC’s Watch & Clock Bulletin, pages 655-656. That years, thecurator of the National Watch and Clock Museum was pretty sure that the dialwas made by John Davis (b. 1760), who was apparently of Welsh descent. Heworked in New Holland (Lancaster County), PA between 18O2 and 1820. The paintingon the dial face was likely done by William Jones of Philadelphia. The cabinet itselfwas undoubtedly made around the same time, and the clock likely ticked its waythrough the American Civil War, prior to songwriter Henry Work’s famous song (c1875), “My grandfather’s clock/ Was too large for the shelf,/ So it stoodninety years on the floor….”
