ALS: "Tedder", 1p, 4½x5¾. London, 1955 September 21. On letterhead of Marshall of the Royal Air Force/The Lord Tedder, G.C.B. to unknown recipient. Begins: "My dear Sir". In full: "Thank you for your letter of Aug. 24th. I well remember your brother and am only too glad to supply this tiny contribution to his memory-the C.B.E. ribbon. Yours sincerely". Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Accompanied by C.B.E. ribbon, 1½x½. Gray and red stripes. Slightly worn at left and right edges. Fine condition. On verso of display, there is a captioned newspaper photograph depicting Tedder, as Deputy Supreme Commander, and Canadian Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. This ribbon was awarded by both the United Kingdom and Canada. Arthur William Tedder (1890-1967), who was Allied Air Deputy Supreme Commander under Dwight D. Eisenhower (1944-1945), played a significant role in the defeat of Germany on the Western Front during WWII and signed the German surrender on behalf of Eisenhower. Tedder, who had joined the British Army in 1913, transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916. From 1936-1938, he served as RAF Commander of the Far East Command, and he later headed the RAF's Middle East Command (1941). Knighted in 1942, Tedder was named 1st Baron Tedder of Glenguin in 1946, the year he published With Prejudice, his account of his war experiences. Two items. Framed to an overall size of 22x18½.
