September 30, 1795-Dated Federal Period, Partially-Printed Document Signed, “John Chester” as a Connecticut “Collector of the Revenue” being a Retail License for Selling Foreign Distilled Spirits, Very Fine. A $5 Federal “USA” embossed circular revenue stamp is at upper left, and located at left center is an United States Heraldic Eagle embossed seal. This license is Signed in red ink by the Revolutionary War noted Patriot “John Chester” (1749-1809).
John Chester was a militia officer and member of the Connecticut General Assembly before the Revolutionary War. He saw action with Connecticut troops, participated in the fighting at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Crossing the Delaware December 25th, 1776 with General Washington to fight in the Battle of Trenton the following day. He did not join the Continental Army and left military service after 1776. John Chester went on to serve as Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives and later he would hold public offices. He also was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from Connecticut.
This document is 1 page, measures 7” x 8.5” has some scattered foxing and a small stain in the right outer margin, The red ink signature of John Chester is clear measuring 2.5 inches long near center.
JOHN CHESTER (1749-1809). Revolutionary War Patriot Hero at the Battle of Bunker Hill, depicted in Gilbert Stuart’s historic painting “The Death of General Warren” shown holding the dying General Joseph Warren while trying to protect him from the advancing British, he Crossed the Delaware with General George Washington at Trenton as a Continental Army Soldier from Connecticut.
