Naval General Service Medal (1847), one clasp:‘Syria’ named FREDK CORSAR. It comes with copies of medal roll and RoyalHospital Chelsea Admission Book.

Private Frederick Corsar was born in Warwickshire in 1809.He enlisted into the Royal Marines at Woolwich in 1832 and discharged timeexpired in 1853.

He qualified for the medal and clasp whilst serving on H.M.S.Princess Charlotte (page 331 of the book, The Naval General Service Roll1793-1840). Whilst some 738 men crewed the ship, it is unknown how many were actually issued.

The Princess Charlotte was a 104-gun first-rate ship of theline of the Royal Navy, launched in 1825 at Portsmouth. From 1837 to 1841 sheserved as the Flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet flying the Flag of ViceAdmiral Sir Robert Stopford and thus took part in the Syrian War and thebombardment of Acre.

The Mediterranean Fleet, commanded by Stopford, andsupported by small Austrian and Turkish squadrons, moved into position againstthe western and southern sides of Acre on November 3-4 and opened fire at14:00. The ships anchored closer to the shore than expected, at 450–800 metres,and the Egyptian fire was too high, however the R.N. fire was devastatinglyaccurate and destroyed the defensive guns by either direct hits or by the wallsof the fortifications falling on their crews. The sailing ships of the linewere in two lines with steamers manoeuvring in between. At 16:20 a shellpenetrated the main magazine in the south of the city, which exploded killing1,100 men. The guns ashore fell silent and that night the city was occupied.British losses were light: 18 men killed and 41 wounded. The ships had fired48,000 rounds.

Frederick appears in the Royal Hospital Chelsea AdmissionBooks aged 59. His records have not been digitalised yet but can be viewed atthe national Archives Kew in Folios 135 – 138. ADM157/24/135.
